Frequently asked questions.
What do postnatal doulas do?
Postnatal doulas give emotional support to a family with a new baby: sessions for debriefing the birth and exploring the emotions that have been experienced or are being experienced in the transition to parenthood. They can also signpost families to useful information and up to date evidence based research so parents can feel confident and empowered to trust their instincts and understand their baby. Practically postnatal doulas can help with household management, provide nourishing food, give space and time for recovery and provide physical comfort.
Why is there a need for postnatal doulas?
In the UK we do not have a package of postnatal care once discharged from hospital: there is little continuity of care - families often see or speak to different professionals; two midwife check ups mainly discussing feeding and babies bowel movements before discharge at 10 days and a health visitor check during this time to weigh your baby, discuss vaccinations and the red book. There is little support for the new family. Doulas can provide the help and support you need to keep your glass full.
Social support has been found to have a positive impact on the emotional wellbeing of a pregnant and postpartum mother and can be a protective factor against anxiety and depression alongside a successful life transition. How do I find the right postnatal doula for me?
When searching for a postnatal doula, first look at some of the credentials or the doula’s own story to see if they appeal to you. When looking on a site such as Doula UK or Find My Doula, there will be a little blurb attached to each profile giving some information about the doula. Once you have found potential doulas, set up telephone interviews whereby you can ask relevant questions: families they have worked for; doula certification; DBS checks; contracts and what happens if they are unable to attend on a day for example. This can then progress to a more personal face to face interview. Ultimately, you are looking for a connection with someone: does this person listen well? Will my wishes be respected? Do I want to spend significant time with this doula?
Are remote care packages offered?
Many doulas will offer remote care packages since COVID. Just explain what you are looking for and see if it would work for both your family and the doula.
